Fiona Tunnicliffe

I have been a potter for nearly 30 years and most of that time I have made animals in various forms. I supply galleries throughout New Zealand and have also exhibited in Australia and been part of a group invited to the Warrendyte Potters market in Melbourne. My latest exhibitions were Animalia I and II at the Taupo Art Gallery and “Harrys Friends” and “Edwards Companions” at Artspost in Hamilton. I am a member of the New Zealand Society of Potters and the Academy of Fine Arts and divide my time between making for galleries, and teaching- community groups, night classes, weekend workshops and children’s classes.

I obviously had a misspent youth dragging my family around zoos, aquariums and anywhere that I could observe and photograph animals. There is still a lot to learn, both about form and clay, and I love the evolution that happens when you combine them. The properties that cause clay warp and crack and move in response to heat make it my favourite medium to work with. The fact that I can use stamps, images and textures to add a narrative to the surface is an added bonus.
