In 1987 Robyn was introduced into the art world through a friend while living in Australia, after an introductory year her works soon developed toward both painting and sculpture. Completing a B.F.A. painting from U.C.N.V affiliate La Trobe University Melbourne Victoria, Australia.
Early works were influenced by the vast spacial geography found in the Australian outback where the artist was living and also within the strangeness and diversity of a number of contemporary Australian painters she found an affinity with, these include Charles Blackman, Sydney Nolan and Joy Hester. Robyn had success exhibiting and developing her career in Australia during this time.
Returning to New Zealand in 1994 Gibson completed M.F.A. Sculpture at Elam, Auckland University in 2001. Gibson's professional career spans over 27 years of exhibiting and participating in art projects in both New Zealand and Australia.
